Volunteers from the Australia-Cuba Friendship Society launched the 2023 incarnation of β€œAustralia to Cuba with love” on June 3 in the Botanical Gardens.

Campaigners aim to help end the US blockade of Cuba and to raise money for medical equipment in Cuba by walking, cycling, dancing or running 14,886 kilometres β€” the distance between Australia and Cuba over eight weeks.

Supporters can pledge money or sign up to participate .

Last year, more than 60 people helped raise more than $25,000 for medical equipment.

β€œThe reasons for a second round of the campaign are just as compelling,” the website explained. β€œIn 2023 the people of Cuba continue in their relentless struggle to assert their sovereignty in the face of the inhumane blockade imposed by their powerful neighbour.”

β€œShamefully, under [US President Joe] Biden, the United States has tightened the squeeze in a vain attempt to turn Cuban people against their revolution.

β€œThe US blockade is a massive and unacceptable violation of Cuban people’s human rights; it is an economic war against a small country whose revolution has created extraordinary benefits for its people.”
