Why

Equip yourself with skills for non-violent direct action in support of Palestine.

In recent months we’ve seen people and communities take non-violent direct action here on this continent and all across the globe in solidarity with the people of Palestine against the Israeli war machine. NVDA has been a crucial element of anti-war and anti-apartheid movements for centuries. More broadly, NVDA tactics have been used for centuries and continue to be used very effectively by climate activists, feminist and queer activists, anti-racist activists, disability justice activists, and more.

In the wake of extremely violent police repression at the non-violent protest against Zim Shipping at Port Botany on 21 November, members of the community have been expressing a desire for a NVDA workshop to feel as confident as possible attending future protests.

So, what is NVDA, and why do people do it? What separates ‘direct action’ from ‘indirect action’? What do we consider ‘violent’ and ‘non-violent’? How do strikes, picket lines and other union actions function as effective NVDA? How do we best keep ourselves safe from state violence while taking action? What charges are often associated with protests in NSW, and what can the arrest and court process look like for those charged?

These are just some of the questions we’ll explore together on the morning of Saturday January 13. This training is open to all community members and while its content will certainly be transferable across social movements, it will have a particular focus on union action for Palestine.

* Note: we are not lawyers and this workshop will not contain legal advice. This workshop will not encourage any form of lawbreaking. It is informational only.
