Protesters rallied in Tweed Heads, Coffs Harbour and Port Macquarie on National Threatened Species Day on September 7.

Outside the office of National’s MP Geoff Provest in Tweed Head, protesters heard from the North East Forest Alliance’s Sean O'Shannessy and Dailan Pugh.

“The government needs to feel the heat from the people of New South Wales,” he said. “The NSW Coalition government is spending millions of dollars to log and clear threatened species habitat. This has to stop for koalas and greater gliders to survive.”

The movement against the extinction wants the NSW government protect the habitat of all threatened species — including in public forests.

“Things need to be turned around so that Provest feels like a threatened species,” Pugh said.

“We will not stand by while koalas and greater gliders, and a huge range of other species, becomes extinct. We rely on those forests for our water, our climate, our fire protection and the economic value for tourism in this hotspot of biodiversity.”

The Nationals won Tweed from Labor in 2007 and only have a very slim margin.
