Stop Adani showed its solidarity with Indian farmers at a spirited protest outside Adani headquarters in Brisbane on February 2 attended by around 40 people.
Amandeep Singh Pannu told ΒιΆΉΣ³» that the farmers protest in India is the βworldβs biggest protestβ and that 200 people have been killed by the Modi government repression.
Internet has been cut off and journalists trying to report the news are being taken into custody.
Stop Adaniβs Matt Ross told ΒιΆΉΣ³» that young people in India are fighting Adaniβs business proposals including threats to Indigenous peopleβs land to wetlands and national parks. βThe big focus [of the action was giving solidarity] to the farmersβ movement,β he said.
The Adani company is a close ally of the far-right Modi regime and is supporting the Modi governmentβs neoliberal farm laws.
In Sydney, Jim McIlroy reports that 50 people gathered on the steps of Australia Square to show solidarity with the Indian farmers. Others held an action outside the State Bank of India, calling on it to walk away from a billion dollar loan to Adani.
Speakers condemned spending Indian public funds on a climate-destroying coal project when India needs the funds to combat the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pressure is mounting on insurance companies and other financial organisations to refuse to support the Adani project.
